Important information for Tobii Studio users
Tobii has informed Tobii Studio users that the license server will be shut down on 31.01.2024 and that after that date no deinstallation or installation of Tobii Studio will be possible. Also, all future support of the software will be stopped. As some researchers and research project in labs across the world still rely on Tobi Studio, here are some ideas how to overcome this problem.
Will this affect my current research?
If you purchased a perpetual license of Tobii Studio, you still have the right to use it. But there are two major issues after end of January 2024: you can only use the licenses that are already in use on a specific computer, no more changes to other computers or new computers will be possible anymore. Also, one never knows if Tobii Studio will still work with newer versions of Windows, officially it was only supported until Windows 10 and now being end of life, no adjustments to newer Windows version will be made. Please note that one cannot import Tobii Studio projects into Tobii Pro Lab, not even the data!
When the license server of Tobii Studio is shut down end of January 2024 what should I do?
You should set up dedicated computers just for Tobii Studio running on Windows 10 max. Remember, if you have a Tobii Studio license with several activations, you have to do that for each activation. For example, you have a license starting with G or J with for example 3 activations, then you need 3 computers, one for each activation, because after end of January 2024 you will not be able to change or install those activations anymore. After that you can choose to continue using this setup or change to a different software platform. For example, our multimodal solution offers 10 years of free upgrades, is capable of importing your current Tobii Studio data for further analysis - and after that you would be able to continue using Tobii Hardware as before, more details see below.
Recent change in the area of eye-tracking and biometric measurements for Tobii and iMotions users
Will this affect my current research?
If you purchased your Tobii equipment and iMotions license before the split, they will continue to be compatible even with future software updates, and you can continue using your current tools together. Any Tobii hardware and iMotions software purchased after the split will not be compatible. If you have recent Tobii equipment and want to combine several data-streams our BSS software could be an alternative, we would be happy to discuss your use case and showcase our software.
We are happy with synchronising Tobii Eye Trackers with other measurements; are there other solutions that we could use?
There are of course other multimodal software solutions available! If you would like to switch solutions, we would offer you a special discount to switch from iMotions software to our software, which is capable of synchronising Tobii eye tracking with other biometric data like EEG, NIRS, GSR or the likes and would replace iMotions at much lower costs. There will also be a free Open Source Community Edition available than can be used as a student version for as many students as you like.
We have invested a lot of time and effort in establishing iMotions at your lab, does that mean we have to start from scratch all over again?
No, of course not. You can continue with your setup as is, until you find an alternative solution for future use if you wish. For our BSS software for example, as there is a certain transition needed from iMotions to our new solutions, we will support you during this transitional period and help you getting up to speed again as soon as possible to continue to take care of what is most important to you, your research! We have a lot of long-term clients who use our systems and have already used this network to help each other in getting additional numbers or respondents within the network to speed up data collection and also help with loans and rental of equipment to save on costs or high investments for specific projects outside the normal scope of your lab.
I am running a longitudinal study with eye-tracking and other biometric measurements, what should I do?
If your study is already running and ongoing, you are not affected by the change, and you can continue using your current setup until the end of the study. If unsure, reach out to your representative at either Tobii or iMotions for further guidance.
After that you can choose to continue using your existing setup or change to a different software platform.
